Information Literacy Skills Curriculum

Ellington Public Schools

Grades 9 – 12

Students have previously learned to:

1.    Define and communicate information needs

2.    Identify, locate, and use an array of print and electronic resources available through the library media center

3.    Access resources outside of school to best fulfill their information needs

4.    Demonstrate the ability to independently navigate through a variety of software menus to access information

5.    Select and extract information from multiple resources both primary and secondary to accomplish a given task

6.    Independently use critical evaluation skills in reading, viewing, and listening to assess the quality of print, non-print, and electronic resources

7.    Practice academic integrity at all times: during information gathering and during the synthesis process by crediting sources with parenthetical citation, works cited lists, and appropriate documentation of all information and materials used.

8.    Observe educational “fair use” guidelines

9.    Demonstrate responsible and ethical use of hardware, software, and networks with an understanding of legal implications

 

Reinforcement and mastery of K – 8 Literacy Skills will continue in grades 9 – 12.

In addition students will:

-Identify the purpose of research by focusing on the specific question to be answered and use a variety of questioning skills to focus on that essential question.

 

-Develop and use criteria for selecting materials of appropriate content and purpose.

 

-Use sources of information to independently apply evaluative criteria to identify point of view, bias, stereotype, accuracy, continuity and currency of content.

 

-Demonstrate the ability to redefine and adjust evaluative criteria applied to information during the research process.

 

-Independently determine the most appropriate format and technology to use to create a presentation that clearly communicates information.

 

- Independently access and adjust the search process throughout the project.

 

- Make a clear, well-supported presentation using appropriate presentation methods that answers the essential question by applying the information obtained in the search.

 

- Reflect and self-assess the process of investigation and inquiry to develop a product.
